Psalms 1 – 12 –
Beginning May 17, and continuing through August, our evening sermons will explore Psalms 1 through 12. John Calvin considered the Book of Psalms to be “An Anatomy of all the Parts of the Soul”, explaining that, “there is not an emotion of which any one can be conscious that is not here represented as in a mirror. Or rather, the Holy Spirit has here drawn to the life all the griefs, sorrows, fears, doubts, hopes, cares, perplexities, in short, all the distracting emotions with which the minds of men are wont to be agitated”. (from Calvin’s introduction to his commentary on the Psalms). This opening portion of the Psalter certainly runs the gamut of such emotions! Calvin correctly notes that this “anatomy” is the work of the Holy Spirit: that being so, we can expect the Holy Spirit to redirect our gaze from our “distracting emotions” to the sufficiency of Jesus. Join us for evening worship and refreshment of soul from Psalms 1–12.
