Habakkuk: Living By Faith

– Beginning in May 2026, Pastors Martin and Watson will begin a series of morning sermons from Habakkuk. How does faith respond when chaos reigns? The question has a contemporary ring, but it’s by no means a new one. In fact, it’s a question the Bible raises and addresses head on in more than one place. One of the most dramatic collisions of faith and experience occurs in the book of Habakkuk. Indeed, the prophet is so shaken by what he sees that he confronts God directly: “Whatever are you doing?” This is a dramatic re-imagining of the role of the prophet for Habakkuk’s question is the kind of challenge that his Old Testament prophetic colleagues usually directed to people on behalf of God!
Habakkuk’s audacious question is an urgent one, and the Lord patiently hears him out and responds graciously. This should be encouraging for those of us who have the same question, whether we speak it aloud or puzzle over it silently (and often fretfully). At the heart of God’s answer is the statement: “the righteous shall live by his faith.” (Habakkuk 2:4, ESV). Our morning sermons from Habakkuk in May through July will teach us what it means to live by faith—the appropriate lifestyle of the Christian in any period of history!
